Band Camp - 7/25-7/29 AND 8/1-8/5
Band Camp schedules are slightly different this year. Due to instructor availability, the schedule is as follows:
Winds - 8-5 both weeks
Colorguard - 1st week 1-9, 2nd week 8-5
Pit - 1-9 both weeks
Drumline - Tim has communicated the modified schedule with you
Even with the modified schedule, the goal is the be able to ensemble, with everyone, each afternoon from 3:15-5:00. The more we can put the show together on the field, the more success we will see!
A few important reminders for our returning folks, and good information for our new members. First and foremost, hydration is key. Do not thinking drinking a glass of water in the morning is going to help you. Begin hydrating at least a few days in advance. Water is your friend. Avoid sugary drinks and caffeinated drinks. (yes, this is coming from me, the coffee addict). My recommendation is to purchase one of the gallon refillable jugs from Walmart. We will have water on the field as well, but you will easily drink that jug in a day at band camp.
Equally as important is proper nutrition. Heavy food is NOT your friend. Fruits, light carbs, etc, are a great idea. Eating the Big Breakfast from McDonalds or something equivalent will not be a smart choice.
Three essential items for your happiness during camp - sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. If the weather this past week is any indication of what we have in store weather wise, be prepared. We do spend a vast majority of our time outside during band camp, but we do take adequate breaks to ensure your health and well-being.
Remember, you need to pack a lunch. No student is permitted to leave campus to go purchase a lunch. Pack a sandwich, some fruit, etc. The Band Boosters will provide lunch Friday each week (and dinner for those groups rehearsing 1-9). Menus will be announced prior to Friday to ensure you are aware in case of food allergies. If you are a new member, and unsure what to pack, ask someone who has done this before for suggestions! Do not pack meals that require the use of a microwave, as we do not have access to the whole pile of cafeteria ones.
During camp weeks, the important thing is to go home, get a good night's sleep, and come back ready to work the next day. The more we accomplish over these two weeks, the easier our season is. Ask any upperclassmen, and its FAR easier to learn drill during camp than during 3 hour rehearsals.
If you are unsure of anything regarding band camp, feel free to ask your section leaders. They are more than willing to provide information!
Drum Corps Championship Viewing Party - Saturday, 8/13
On Saturday, August 13th, Drum Corps International hosts their World Championship event, in which the top 12 drum corps compete for the World Championship. This event takes place each summer in Indianapolis, IN, but we have a great opportunity to watch the show live in the band room via the online subscription. The show begins around 5:30 PM, and runs until around 10 PM. We will be streaming it on the Big Screen in the band room. Bring snacks, bring some comfy folding chairs or enjoy band room chairs, and enjoy the show. This is a FREE opportunity, and a chance to unwind the week after band camp, enjoy some incredible performances, and have a lot of fun.
For those who do not know what Drum Corps is, I recommend checking out www.dci.org for information. Drum Corps International is the Major League of the Marching Arts. This year, we have an alumnus, Jesse Valencia marching with the Cadets, and a member of our design staff, Ryan Williams, working with the same corps.

As you know, our new uniforms are coming soon. Originally we were provided a ship date after Band Camp, before our first performance, but it appears we are ahead of schedule. The new plumes have arrived, and the rest of the uniform is not far behind. Details on fittings DURING band camp will be shared once the new uniform is in and cataloged. Thank you to the Big Spring Band Boosters and the School District Administration for supporting this welcome and needed upgrade for our program. I'm excited to see the band in them the first time!
As always, if you have any questions that I have not answered, feel free to ask. Your section leaders are a wealth of information, but if they do not have all the answers, I am more than willing to help as well!
See you in 9 days!
